Ingredients of Masoor Dal Soup

  • 1 cup masoor dal
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 carrot, diced
  • 1 ½ tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
  • 1 ½ inch grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 4 cups of water
  • Ghee/oil (as per your preference)
  • Salt (as per taste levels)
  • Chopped coriander leaves (for garnish)
  • Slivered ginger

How to Make Masoor Dal Soup

Rinse and soak masoor dal for 30 minutes. Set it aside.

Take a large pot and heat ghee/oil in it on medium flame. Now add cumin seeds to the oil and wait for them to splutter. Now add chopped onions and ginger and saute until the onions are translucent.

Now add spices - coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, black pepper, and salt, and mix well. Cook until the spices are well coated in onions and ginger.

After it's cooked, add soaked masoor dal and diced carrots and mix well. Add 4 cups of water to the mix and stir well. Bring masoor dal soup to a boil and then cover it with a lid for 20-25 minutes.

After the masoor dal and carrots are soft, add more water if the soup has become thick. Give it a good mix and add salt if less. Garnish with coriander leaves and slivered ginger slices and voila! Your Masoor Dal Soup is ready to serve!
