How to make Onion Salan

Onion Salan, also known as pyaz ka salan, is very popular in Hyderabad. Its entire recipe is prepared like chilli salan, except onion is used instead of chillies in the gravy. You can pair it with biryani, roti or naan.

Ingredients of Onion Salan

  • 10-12 Baby onions
  • 2 tbsp Peanuts
  • 1 tbsp Sesame
  • 1 tbsp khus khus
  • 1 tbsp Grated coconut
  • 1 tsp Coriander Seeds
  • 1 tbsp Jeera
  • 4 dried red chillies
  • 10-15 Curry Leaves
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Ginger Garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Coriander Powder
  • 1 tbsp Turmeric paste
  • Desi ghee
  • 4 Green Chillies
  • 1 Medium sized sliced onion
  • 2 tbsp Oil

How to Make Onion Salan

Take a pan, dry roast peanuts, whole coriander, whole chili, one medium chopped onion, curry leaves, half a teaspoon cumin, poppy seeds and sesame seeds. Let it cool down.

Now grind all these things in a jar and make a paste.

Heat 2 tbsp oil, add 1/2 tsp cumin, mustard seeds, curry leaves and ginger garlic paste and stir fry it.

Add ground paste, turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder and salt. Cook on a medium flame, stirring occasionally, till the masala is fried and the oil separates.

Meanwhile, heat a small spoonful of desi ghee in a pan and fry all the small onions till they become light pink, along with this add green chilies and fry them.

Add fried onions and green chilies to the prepared spices and mix well. Also add tamarind paste to it.
7.
Add 1 cup of water to it, cover and cook on low flame for 5 minutes.
8.
After 5 minutes, remove the lid and garnish with coriander leaves and pair the hot onion salan with your favorite thing.
