About Sambar Sadam Recipe: A comforting one-pot meal of rice and sambar, this one is a must-try!

Ingredients of Sambar Sadam

  • For rice and dal:
  • 2 cup rice
  • 1 cup arha dal
  • A pinch of salt
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tsp oil
  • For veggies:
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 cup tomatoes (diced)
  • 1 cup onion, sliced
  • 7-8 Curry leaves
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • 1 cup mix of carrot and beans
  • 2 drumsticks
  • 1 tbsp tamarind pulp
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tbsp sambar powder
  • 2 tsp jaggery
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • Temper:
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 4-5 Curry leaves
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • 1 tsp oil

How to Make Sambar Sadam

  • 1.Rinse rice and dal together and pressure cook in water along with salt and oil for about 15 minutes.
  • 2.When cooked, mash lightly and keep aside.
  • Prepare veggies:
  • 1.Heat oil and saute onion in it for about a minute on low flame.
  • 2.Add curry leaves, asafoetida, tomatoes and saute for 2 minutes. Now add rest of the ingredients and cook until tender.
  • 3.Now add turmeric, red chilli powder, cumin and salt to this. Mix well and let it cook, covered.
  • 4.Add some water and then add tamarind pulp, sambar powder and jaggery to it. Let it simmer for a while.
  • Prepare sambar rice:
  • 1.When the veggies are cooked through, add the cooked rice and dal to this.
  • 2.Mix well until a smooth consistency. Add water if you want it to be more of liquid consistency. Mix again. You can add ghee at this point if you want.
  • 3.Make a tempering of the mentioned ingredients and pour them over the sambar rice. Serve hot.
