Ingredients of Sambar Sadam

  • For rice and dal:
  • 2 cup rice
  • 1 cup arha dal
  • A pinch of salt
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tsp oil
  • For veggies:
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 cup tomatoes (diced)
  • 1 cup onion, sliced
  • 7-8 Curry leaves
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • 1 cup mix of carrot and beans
  • 2 drumsticks
  • 1 tbsp tamarind pulp
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tbsp sambar powder
  • 2 tsp jaggery
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • Temper:
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 4-5 Curry leaves
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • 1 tsp oil

How to Make Sambar Sadam

Rinse rice and dal together and pressure cook in water along with salt and oil for about 15 minutes.

When cooked, mash lightly and keep aside.

Prepare veggies:

1.
Heat oil and saute onion in it for about a minute on low flame.

Add curry leaves, asafoetida, tomatoes and saute for 2 minutes. Now add rest of the ingredients and cook until tender.

Now add turmeric, red chilli powder, cumin and salt to this. Mix well and let it cook, covered.

Add some water and then add tamarind pulp, sambar powder and jaggery to it. Let it simmer for a while.

Prepare sambar rice:

1.
When the veggies are cooked through, add the cooked rice and dal to this.
2.
Mix well until a smooth consistency. Add water if you want it to be more of liquid consistency. Mix again. You can add ghee at this point if you want.
3.
Make a tempering of the mentioned ingredients and pour them over the sambar rice. Serve hot.
