Steaming is one of the simplest cooking methods, wouldn't you agree?! This healthy cooking technique uses hot vapours (also known as steam) to cook food. However, when it comes to steaming food at home, we are always missing some utensils or contraptions to do the process. If only there was a way to steam food with the utensils available in our Indian kitchen?! Guess what, there is! With just a pressure cooker, kadhai, plate and a bowl, you can steam momos, vegetables, dhoklas and idlis at home.

How To Steam Food Without A Steamer
It is very easy to steam at home, even if you don't have a steamer! You can either use a pressure cooker or a patila to steam at home.
How To Steam Food In A Pressure Cooker
Place a bowl in the pressure cooker. This bowl is will act as a stand, make sure the open mouth of the bowl faces the bottom of the pressure cooker. Pour water into the pressure cooker, and around the bowl. Use about 2-3 cups of water. Place a plate on top of the bowl. Make sure the water is not reaching the level of the plate. Now add your food to the plate. The food should not fall off the plate and into the water. Close the pressure cooker and remove the whistle.
- Momos are pressure cooked for 15-20 minutes
- Dhoklas are pressure cooked for 20-25 minutes
- Idlis are pressure cooked for 10 minutes
- Vegetables are pressure cooked for 5-10 minutes
How To Steam Food In A Patila/ Kadhai
Repeat the procedure in a kadhai or a patila. Place a bowl upside down in the kadhai. Pour water and place a plate on the bowl. Next, add your food and cover the kadhai with a lid.
- Momos are steamed in 15-20 minutes
- Dhoklas are steamed in 20 minutes
- Idlis are steamed in 8-10 minutes
- Vegetables are steamed for 5-10 minutes
