While the practice still prevails in some of the remotest corners of the country and in small villages, most of India has already switched to branded teeth cleaning products including pastes and mouthwashes. Encashing the same age-old tradition of 'datoon' is a Czech company introducing the rest of the world with the brilliance of miswak - what can safely be described as the Middle Eastern counterpart of our desi neem twigs. The company called 'Yoni' recently released a video showing miswak sticks packed in delicate, handy packs that can be carried and used anywhere.
"What about a raw tooth brush full of minerals and vitamins? It re-mineralises tooth enamel," says the advertisement.(Also Read: 6 Amazing Benefits of Chewing Neem Regularly)
Miswak is essentially found in the Middle Eastern countries and is exported to countries like India. "Although it is not used in its raw form in India, it does form a part of most dental care products. It is excellent for fighting cavities and has antibacterial properties," explained Dr. Akhilesh Sharma, a Delhi-based Ayurveda expert.
When the tale of fancy miswak - that Yoni sells for 3.09 Euros - reached the world of twitter, we got to see some pretty interesting reactions!
