Ingredients of Fish Ambultiyal

  • 500 gms tuna
  • 50 gms onion
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1 tsp whole pepper
  • 1 Pandan leaf
  • salt- as needed
  • 1 cup water
  • For the paste:
  • 4 Cardamom pods
  • 3 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tbsp pepper
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp curry powder, roasted
  • 3 Garlic cloves(crushed)
  • 1 tsp chillli flakes
  • 5 pcs goraka (gamboge)
  • 3 tbsp cumin powder
  • to taste salt

How to Make Fish Ambultiyal

Boil a little water and add two pieces of goraka. Boil for about ten minutes and let it cool. Keep the water aside.

Grind the softened goraka pieces and all the ingredients for paste together and set it aside.

Wash the fish with clean water and a little lime. Combine it with the paste made.

Line a large clay pot in the piece of banana leaf. Place the fish covered in paste.
5.
Add the boiled goraka water and cook on high cover wood fired stove until the mixture starts to bubble.
6.
Keep on slow fire until the fish is cooked. Remove and keep on same clay pot until serving.
7.
Serve with rice, roti or bread. This dish can last for 2-3 days if properly cooked.
