Don't waste your food. Here is a quick and easy recipe you could do with the dried idlis you dread. Scrumptious and light, it could be served as a snack or a light supper.

Ingredients of Idli Upma

  • 5 leftover idlis
  • 3 tsp vegetable oil
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp split urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp split channa dal
  • 2-3 dry red chilies
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 big onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt

How to Make Idli Upma

  • 1.Crumble idlis by hand till they break down to small pieces.
  • 2.Heat oil in a deep bottomed vessel. Splutter mustard, urad, channa dal, red chillies and curry leaves in the said order on a low heat.
  • 3.Once the mustard seeds have spluttered and the urad dal turns a healthy golden color, add onion and turmeric powder for a nice color.
  • 4.Once the onions caramelize a bit, mix in the idlis and salt as per taste. (Remember the idlis already have salt, so be careful while adding more).
  • 5.Note: You can add vegetables of your choice if desired.
