Ingredients of Steamed Crab with Tomato and Dal Rasam
- 1 kg small live crabs (200-300 g each)
- 4 Tbsp toor dal
- 2 Tbsp refined oil
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 2 tsp ginger, chopped
- 1 tsp garlic, peeled
- 2 green chillies
- 1 cup tomato, chopped
- Salt to taste
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 2 Tbsp tamarind pulp
- 1 Tbsp rasam powder
- 1 Tbsp desi ghee
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp urad dal, washed
- 1 tsp curry leaves
- 1 pinch asafetida
- 2 Tbsp fresh coriander
- Few appalams (optional)
- Oil for drying
How to Make Steamed Crab with Tomato and Dal Rasam

Wash and steam crab in combi oven or boiling water till done.

Wash, drain and cook toor dal in a vessel with lots of water until soft. Mash dal with a ladle.

Take oil in a non stick pan. Add cumin seeds and allow it to crackle. Add chopped ginger, garlic and green chilli. Saute for a minute.

Now add chopped tomato, salt, black pepper, tamarind pulp and rasam powder.

Add 750 ml water to tomato masala. Simmer for a few minutes.

Add dal water and simmer. Adjust the seasoning.

Take desi ghee in a small pan and make a south Indian tempering with mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves and asafetida.

Add the tempering in rasam and finish it with chopped coriander.
9.
Fry the appalam until crisp and serve along with steamed crab and tomato rasam.
