A delicious toor dal preparation with a hint of coconut. Tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves. Served with steamed rice.

Ingredients of Varan Bhaat

  • For the tadka:
  • 4-5 tsp ground nut oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 5-6 curry leaves
  • 2-3 slit green chillies
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 small piece ginger
  • For the paste:
  • 1/2 grated coconut
  • 3-4 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Toor / ahrar dal (Pre boiled)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp coriander leave, to garnish

How to Make Varan Bhaat

  • 1.Prepare a paste of coconut, garlic and cumin seeds and keep aside.
  • 2.Heat oil in pan. Prepare a tadka of mustard and cumin seeds, curry leaves, slit green chillies, garlic and ginger. Now add the coconut paste to the pan along with turmeric powder, and salt.
  • 3.Saute for 5 minutes till the tadka turns red.
  • 4.Add pre-boiled dal and water. Wait for one boil. Varan is ready.
  • 5.Garnish with coriander and serve with rice.
