Chikhali Style Dal Gosht

The goodness of dal added with the flavour of mutton makes this a divine recipe.

Ingredients

  •  Refined oil
  • 1 kg mutton
  • 3 cups of toor dal (uncooked)
  • 2 large onions
  • 2 tbsps ginger-garlic paste
  • 3 - 4 bor chillies
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 7 - 8 cloves
  • 2 sticks of cinnamon
  • 4 - 5 cardamoms
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 strip of mace
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • Fresh coriander for garnish

How to Make Chikhali Style Dal Gosht

  1. For the Garam Masala:
  2. Put coriander seeds, cloves, cinnamon, cardamoms, cumin, mace, bay leaves and pepper in a mortar and pestle.
  3. Grind to a powder.

  4. For Dal Gosht:
  5. In a large pot, heat refined oil. Add green chillies and saute for 2 minutes.
  6. Add in diced onions and saute till they turn brown. Add ginger garlic paste and cook on a medium flame till the oil begins to separate from the masala.
  7. Add in a cup of water along with turmeric, red chilli powder and salt to taste. Cook it for 5 - 7 minutes.
  8. Next, add clean & diced mutton along with bor chillies, chopped tomatoes and 1 tbsp of garam masala.
  9. Mix in uncooked toor dal.
  10. Add 5 - 6 cups of water and cover the pan.
  11. Let it cook till mutton is tender (about 1 hour)
  12. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot.
