Guru Nanak Gurpurab, also known as Guru Nanak Jayanti, marks the birth of Guru Nanak, the first Sikh Guru and the founder of Sikhism. The term Gurpurab is a combination of two words: Gur, meaning the 'Guru' or master, and Purab, derived from the Hindi word 'parv', signifying day. Therefore, it is the day associated with the Guru. Guru Nanak Gurpurab holds profound significance as a day to honour the holy Guru and embody his teachings, encouraging followers to fight the five vices: lust, greed, attachment, anger, and pride. His teachings are embedded in the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of Sikhs.
Preceding the festival, devotees engage in Akhand Path, a 48-hour continuous reading of Guru Granth Sahib, held at Gurdwaras. On Guru Nanak Jayanti, celebrations commence as early as 3 am during Amrit Vela, deemed ideal for hymn recitation and meditation. Across Gurdwaras, a special community lunch called Guru ka Langar is served, welcoming everyone to partake in the festivities. At home, devotees prepare traditional meals to celebrate the festival.
