Ingredients of Urad Dal Kadhi

  • 1 Cups Urad Dal
  • 1 cups Dahi (curd)
  • ½ inch Ginger
  • 2 cloves Garlic
  • 2 Green Chillies
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1/2 tsp Sugar
  • to taste Salt
  • Mustard oil for frying
  • For the tadka:
  • 1 tbsp Mustard oil
  • 8 curry leaves
  • ¼ tsp Mustard seeds
  • ¼ tsp Jeera (cumin seeds)
  • 3 cloves Garlic
  • 1 big Dry red chilli/ Kashmiri chilli
  • ¼ tsp Haldi (turmeric powder)
  • ¼ tsp chilli powder
  • ¼ tsp Hing (Asafoetida)

How to Make Urad Dal Kadhi

Soak the urad dal for 3-4 hours. Later, drain out the water and transfer the dal into a mixer.
Add ginger, 2 cloves of garlic and green chillies. Blend to form a thick, coarse batter.
Make balls out of this mixture and fry them in mustard oil to make pakoras. Set aside.
In a big bowl, take the dahi and add 1 cup of water. Churn together to form a lassi-like consistency. Add the sugar and salt to taste.
Add leftover batter (or around 1 tbsp) to the dahi mixture and mix thoroughly.
In a kadhai over low flame, add 1 tbsp of mustard oil to begin the tadka.
Add the remaining tadka spices. Remember to break the red chilli before adding it. Wait till the garlic splutters and turns light brown.
Pour the dahi mixture gently into the kadhai. Add the remaining cup of water and continue stirring over medium flame.
Gently pop in the pakoras once the kadhi is boiling. Stir lightly and let it cook for 4-5 minutes.
Garnish with fresh coriander and serve with hot jeera rice.
