Prawn Balchao with Fenni

Prawn balchaon is a Goan dish. Prawns cooked in a red masaledaar paste, onions and some Goan feni.

Ingredients of Prawn Balchao with Fenni

  • 250 gm prawns
  • 100 ml oil
  • 25 gm garlic
  • 100 gm onions
  • 05 gm turmeric
  • 02 gm curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 200 ml Fenni

  • For the paste:
  • 10 gm cumin seeds
  • 10 gm peppercorns
  • 100 gm red chillies
  • 200 ml coconut vinegar
  • 50 gm small dried shrimps
  • 25 gm ginger
  • 75 gm garlic

How to Make Prawn Balchao with Fenni

  1. Chop the onions and the garlic. Grind all the ingredients for the paste with the vinegar.
  2. Shell and clean the prawns.
  3. Heat oil and add the chopped garlic.
  4. When the garlic is golden brown add the chopped onions and saute.
  5. Add the curry leaves and the paste and mix thoroughly and saute for 10 minutes.
  6. Keep adding coconut vinegar if the mixture becomes dry.
  7. Mix in the prawns and cook for another 15 minutes.
  8. Finish by pouring in the Fenni.
