Recent times have seen an upsurge in people trying to eat healthy and clean. This has led to a lot of us cramping everything that we can find online under the label of ‘Healthy' in our diets. As much as being healthy is important, it is also necessary to remember that we have to be mindful while choosing which of these healthy products we put in our bodies. Celebrity nutritionist Pooja Makhija recently shared the health benefits of makhana, also known as foxnut, on her Instagram profile. She listed out the variety of benefits that makhanas bring to our plates. They are a great source of fibre, zinc, magnesium, calcium and Iron. They are gluten-free, help satiate your hunger, curb appetite and also are great for your hair. From weight loss to skin and hair, makhana has a benefit for each one of us.
Pooja Makhija also points out that the most important part is that makhanas have Kaempferol, which is an antioxidant that prevents ageing, repairs damaged proteins and even helps with greying hair.

Now we know why our grandmothers always munched on these. In fact, when trying to eat healthy, it is always a good option to start from our roots. Healthy superfoods like Makhanas, Jackfruits, Moringas, Curry leaves, Turmeric are locally found and sometimes get lost under the bling of international ingredients.
Pooja has started out a series of posts labelled ‘Indian superfood battle' where she talks about these local home-grown superfoods which have a long list of benefits and are easily available. In another video under the ‘Indian superfood battle' tag, she talks about the goodness and forgotten benefits of the humble curry leaves.
