When it comes to food updates, Padma Lakshmi never fails to impress. From hosting cooking shows to sharing tips and tricks on Instagram, she keeps her followers hooked with all things delicious. On Friday, she posted a video explaining why washing rice is an essential step in cooking. “So what people do not realise is that the first important step to cooking basmati rice is to rinse it,” Padma Lakshmi shares.
Holding up a bowl of rice, Padma Lakshmi shows the cloudy water from the first rinse and explains that rinsing removes starch. She explains how one should keep rinsing until the water runs “clear.” Padma Lakshmi mentions people do not wash their rice because they think it washes away nutrients. “I was raised to wash rice,” she adds. According to her, removing starch ensures that the rice turns out perfectly “fluffy.” She describes the process as “meditative,” saying she loves standing by the window, swirling the rice around in the water.

This is not the first time that Padma Lakshmi has shared her insights on staples. Last month, Padma Lakshmi shared a quick and easy hack for making baked potatoes – no oven needed. Yep, she used a microwave to whip up this comfort food classic. Her toppings? A heavenly combo of butter, yoghurt and a drizzle of Tapatio hot sauce for that fiery kick.
Padma Lakshmi started by piercing the potato all over with a knife or fork to let the steam escape. Then, she placed it into the microwave for a few minutes until it got soft and perfectly cooked. Once done, she topped it with a pat of butter, a dollop of yoghurt and a generous splash of hot sauce. Click here for the full story.
