Apple and Date Pie

A warm delight. Pie made with a gooey apple and dates filling.

Ingredients of Apple and Date Pie

  • 250 gm flour
  • 125 gm diced chilled butter
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2-3 Tbsp water
  • For the Filling:
  • 750 gm apples - peeled, cored and diced
  • 1 tsp butter grated rind
  • 2 limes
  • 5 gm chopped, seeded dates
  • 3-4 Tbsp sugar
  • For the Glaze:
  • 2 egg whites, beaten
  • 1 Tbsp castor sugar

How to Make Apple and Date Pie

  • For the Pastry:
  • 1.Sieve flour into a bowl.
  • 2.Rub in butter until mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  • 3.Bind with yolks and water.
  • 4.Knead lightly until smooth.
  • 5.Cover and chill for 30 minutes.
  • For the Filling:
  • 1.Soften apples in butter with rind and dates.
  • 2.Stir in sugar. Cool.
  • 3.Divide pastry in half.
  • 4.Roll out half to line an 8" pie plate.
  • 5.Fill with apple mixture.
  • 6.Moisten edge with a little water.
  • 7.Roll out remaining pastry and use to cover pie. Chill.
  • 8.Glaze with beaten egg and sugar.
  • 9.Bake at 190 degrees C for 20-25 minutes until golden in color.
  • 10.Serve with cream.
