With our rapidly changing lifestyle hinging more towards convenience and less physical activity, it is very easy to fall prey to the issues of being overweight or obese. Anything that exceeds the norm poses a health risk. Of course, a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle are some of the biggest culprits, but we’re shedding light on the unknown risks that may be driving you towards obesity.
1. Poor sleepAdequate, good quality sleep is important, not just for your brain to be active but also for your body to function well. When you are sleep-deprived, you have higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol which can increase your appetite through the day.2. Regular medicationThe other important thing that can increase your risk of being overweight is the regular intake of drugs. Most people suffer from one or the other lifestyle diseases – be it heart trouble, diabetes or high blood pressure. They are often seeing resorting to daily pills to control these issues, but they can have side effects – one of them being unwanted weight gain. Overuse of antibiotics has been a major cause of obesity.3. Stress, depression and anxietyAgain, depression and anxiety lead to excessive build-up of the stress hormone – cortisol which can trigger excess eating. A 2010 study, published in the American Journal of Public Health, showed that people who feel sad and lonely gain weight more quickly than others.4. Digestive issuesIf your gut is not strong and you experience constipation, slow bowel movements and indigestion frequently, you could be more prone to gaining weight. If your bowels are not regular (once or twice a day and ideally an hour or so after eating), you have a higher risk of obesity. Try including more fiber-rich foods in your diet along with probiotics. If that doesn’t help, consult your doctor and check for other ailments like hypothyroidism which may be affecting your gut and causing weight gain. Also read : (How to Lose Weight Fast: 10 Tips to Shed Kilos the Healthy Way)5. It could be another issue like diabetes, thyroid, PCOD or some hormonal problems that may lead you to put on weight.
