Significance of Chaitra Navratri
The nine manifestations of Durga are worshipped during Chaitra Navratri. As a sign of devotion, people undertake vrat (fasting) on all nine days or the first and last day. This ritualistic fast has certain rules that devotees must adhere to. Many of them strictly follow a Sattvik diet. This means that they do not consume foods with onion, garlic, egg, meat and alcohol. Others may choose to observe a phallar fast, consuming only fruits, vegetables, milk and water while abstaining from grains, cereals and legumes. Those on a nirjala fast do not drink even water during their vrat.
