Sushi Donut: The Latest Food Trend Instagram is Drooling Over

In the wonderfully weird world of food trends and food mashups, there are winners and there are losers. The cronut, for instance, is an all-star. Ramen Crust Pizza on the other hand, the world could have done without. But today, we found a winner. Presenting: The sushi donut.

Love sushi? Love donuts? Instagram user @sobeautifullyraw has combined both your favourite foods into one beautiful package. Don't worry, we're not talking about a deep fried, chocolate-covered Prawn Tempura Maki roll. A sushi donut is simply the components of sushi formed into the shape of a donut. Just to be clear, the sushi donut must not be confused with the donut sushi. Yes, semantics matter. The latter refers to sushi-shaped donuts. It may not be the next avocado toast, but it's definitely the new cronut. Social media can't help but stare (and share) at this culinary delight making the rounds on Instagram.

The First Sushi Donut

Food Blogger Sam Murphy aka @sobeautifullyraw's version incorporates rice, black sesame seeds, ginger, wasabi, cashew mayo and avocado, making it completely vegan. You need to grease a donut mould with coconut oil, add cooled sushi rice and then gently remove by lifting the pan upside down.
