In Vietnam the groom has to present this cake to the bride before proposing. Made with wheat starch, mung dal and passion fruit puree, this is a very unconventional steamed cake recipe. Also known as 'Banh phu the'.

Ingredients of Vietnamese Husband And Wife Cake

  • For the dough:
  • 250 gm flour
  • 100 gm wheat starch
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup desiccated coconut
  • Water, to make a paste

  • For the filling:
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 1 cup moong dal (boiled in 2 cups water)
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 4-5 Tbsp powdered sugar
  • 3-4 Tbsp passion fruit puree (You can add any fruit puree)

  • Garnishing:
  • Honey
  • Black sesame seeds

How to Make Vietnamese Husband And Wife Cake

  1. For the dough:
  2. In a pan add flour, wheat starch, sugar, coconut and make a paste with some water. Heat it and gradually keep adding water till it starts to form a sticky dough. Keep aside to solidify.

  3. For the filling:
  4. In another pan add oil and saute boiled moong dal.
  5. Add sugar, lemon juice and fruit puree. Mix well.

  6. Plating up elements:
  7. In a container, place a layer of the starchy dough (Like you do while making pies.)
  8. Stuff with moong dal mixture.
  9. Cover with a layer of the dough.
  10. Steam for 10 minutes.
  11. Garnish with some black sesame seeds and drizzle honey.
  12. Ready to serve.
